And he used to say: “Whoever spends the night in prayer reciting two hundred verses will be recorded among the devoutly obedient and sincere.” (1)
(*) In the printed edition of Sifat al-Salat (p. 120) one reads: “For that reason the Prophet ﷺ would not recite the Quran in less than three (days).” In the Shaykh’s own copy, however, we found that he had placed brackets around this sentence, indicating that he intended to delete it—evidence that he retracted his earlier grading of the report. A survey of his later works confirms this: he listed the narration in Silsilat al-Daʿifa, no. 6954, and judged it “very weak.”
(1) The report is narrated from Abu Hurayra, ascribed to the Prophet (marfuʿ): “Whoever stands in prayer at night with one hundred verses will not be recorded among the heedless; whoever stands with two hundred verses …” and so on. Al-Hakim transmitted it (1/308–309) through ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Abi al-Zinad → Musa ibn ʿUqba → ʿUbayd Allah ibn Salman → his father Abu ʿAbd Allah Salman al-Agharr → Abu Hurayra. This chain is hasan. Al-Hakim declared it “sahih according to Muslim’s criterion,” and al-Dhahabi concurred. That ruling is inaccurate, for Muslim only narrates from Ibn Abi al-Zinad in the Muqaddima, and he never narrates from ʿUbayd Allah ibn Salman at all.
Ibn Khuzayma also included it in his Sahih, as cited in al-Targhib (1/222).
It is corroborated by a narration from Abu al-Dardaʾ (marfuʿ), reported by al-Darimi (2/464–465) and al-Tabarani in al-Kabir. In its chain is Musa ibn ʿUbayda al-Rabadhi, about whom al-Haythami (2/268) says: “He is generally weak.”
There is another marfuʿ narration from Abu Umama as well.
