I add: This runs counter to the Prophet’s ﷺ explicit statement: “Whoever recites the Quran in less than three nights does not understand it.” The wording is comprehensive, applying to everyone and fixing the minimum at three nights; how, then, can it be claimed that there is no set limit? The Prophet ﷺ clearly declared that anyone who completes the Quran in under three nights fails to grasp its intended meaning. The same point is implied in the verse: “Will they not reflect on the Quran, or are there locks upon their hearts?” (47:24).
Ibn Masud said, “Whoever reads the Quran in less than three nights is a rajiz, chanting it like hurried poetry and scattering it as one scatters worthless dates.” Muadh b. Jabal likewise never completed the Quran in under three nights. Both reports are cited by Ibn Nasr (p. 63).
Thus the Prophet ﷺ ascribed lack of understanding to anyone who does otherwise, as the second wording of the hadith makes plain. The correct view, therefore, is that it is impermissible to finish the Quran in fewer than three nights. This was the choice of Imam Ahmad and other leading jurists, as noted above. Ibn Kathir remarks in Fada’il al-Quran (p. 172): “More than one of the early generations disliked completing the Quran in less than three nights; this is also the position of Abu Ubayd, Ishaq b. Rahuyah, and other later scholars. It is, however, authentically reported that many of the Salaf did so; this is understood either because the relevant hadith had not reached them, or because they were still able to understand and reflect on what they read despite the speed.”
I say: the first explanation is the sound one, whereas the second clashes with the Prophet’s ﷺ statement, “Whoever recites the Quran in less than three nights does not understand it,” as already shown. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was not
