Third chain: Hammam—Qatadah—Yazid ibn Abd Allah ibn al-Shikhkhir—on his authority: I asked, “Messenger of Allah, over how many days should I recite the Quran?” He said, “Recite it in a month.” I replied, “I have strength for more than that.” He said, “Recite it in twenty-five.” I said, “I have strength for more than that.” He said, “Recite it in twenty.” I said, “I have strength for more than that.” He said, “Recite it in fifteen.” I said, “I have strength for more than that.” He said, “Recite it in seven.” I said, “I have strength for more than that.” He said, “No one truly understands it who recites it in fewer than three.” Ahmad, Musnad 2:165, 189, and Abu Dawud 1:220 transmit this chain. Ahmad also records only the final statement through Waki from Hammam—“Whoever recites the Quran in less than three days does not understand it” (2:164, 193)—and through Shuʿbah from Qatadah (2:195). From this route it is likewise reported by al-Tirmidhi 2:156, al-Darimi 1:350, and Ibn Majah 1:406 with the wording: “He does not understand who recites the Quran in less than three.” Al-Darimi commented:
