Husayn added in his narration that the Prophet ﷺ then said: “Every devotee has a surge of zeal, and every surge is followed by a lull; that lull will lead either to the sunnah or to innovation. Whoever’s lull leads him back to the sunnah is rightly guided, but whoever’s lull leads elsewhere is ruined.” Mujahid said: When Abdullah ibn Amr grew old and weak, he would still fast the specified days, sometimes linking several together so as to strengthen himself, and afterward would break his fast while counting those days. He also kept to his daily portion of Qur’an in the same way—occasionally adding or reducing—yet always completing the set total, whether over seven days or three. Afterward he would remark, “Had I accepted the concession granted by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, it would be dearer to me than anything offered in its place, but I parted from him upon a practice and I dislike to abandon it.” I say: This chain too is authentic by the standards of al-Bukhari and Muslim; al-Hafiz (9/77) also cites it from al-Nasa’i. Shuʿbah’s version, transmitted from both Mughirah and Husayn, shows that each of them reported the wording: “Then recite it every three nights.” Second transmission path: al-Harish ibn Sulaym—Talhah ibn Musarrif—Khaythamah—from him, as a concise marfuʿ report: “Recite the Qur’an in a month.” He replied, “I have strength for more than that.” The Prophet said, “Recite it in three.” Abu Dawud recorded it (1/220), and its chain is hasan (sound).
