(1) This report is likewise from Abdullah ibn Amr and it has several chains of transmission. The first chain: through Shuʿbah, from Mughīrah, who said, “I heard Mujāhid narrate it from him with a marfūʿ (Prophetic) attribution: ‘Fast three days of every month.’ He said, ‘I am able to do more than that.’ The Prophet kept increasing it until he said, ‘Fast one day and break the fast the next.’ Then he said to him, ‘Recite the Quran once every month.’ He replied, ‘I am able to do more than that.’ The Prophet continued until he said, ‘Recite it every three nights.’ Al-Bukhārī recorded it (4/181–182) and Aḥmad (2/198). Aḥmad (2/188) and Ibn Ḥibbān (1/146) also transmitted it through the route of Shuʿbah, from Ḥuṣayn, from Mujāhid, with the added wording: the Prophet said, ‘Every deed has a surge of zeal, and every surge is followed by a slackening; whoever’s slackening conforms to my sunnah has succeeded, and whoever’s slackening is otherwise has perished.’ Its chain is sound according to the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim. Aḥmad (2/158) further reported it on the joint authority of Mughīrah and Ḥuṣayn, saying: Hushaym narrated to us from Ḥuṣayn ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān and Mughīrah al-Ḍabbī, from Mujāhid, with the same content.
