“A sound, authentic hadith that is transmitted only through the route of Abu Burdah from Abdullah ibn Amr.”
I add: it satisfies the conditions laid down by the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim).
(Note) Al-Hafiz (9/79) cites this hadith as coming exclusively from al-Darimi, but the kunya of Abu Burdah was miscopied in his text; he wrote:
“Al-Darimi narrates it through Abu Furwah from Abdullah ibn Amr, who said: ‘I said, Messenger of Allah …’,” and then commented:
“This Abu Furwah is al-Juhani; his name is Urwah ibn al-Harith, a trustworthy Kufan.”
I contend that this corruption occurred in his copy of al-Darimi; the correct narrator is Abu Burdah, as found in our copy of al-Darimi and likewise in al-Tirmidhi. Supporting evidence is that Abu Burdah is the one who regularly transmits from Ibn Amr, and he is in turn narrated from by Abu Ishaq al-Sabi‘i and Abu Ishaq al-Shaybani—the former being meant here.
By contrast, no one lists al-Sabi‘i or al-Shaybani among those who transmit from Abu Furwah, nor do they list Ibn Amr—or, in fact, any Companion—among his teachers. Thus al-Hafiz states in Tahdhib al-Tahdhib:
“The compiler recorded no Companion as his teacher; Ibn Hibban did, however, include him among the Trustworthy Followers, and his report from Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As occurs in the Musnad of al-Darimi. Allah knows best.”
I say: all of this stems from the transcription error in his copy of al-Darimi, and I am perplexed that al-Hafiz overlooked it. Allah alone is the true Preserver.
The hadith is also found with an additional wording, namely:
