“in five days.” End of the report. Al-Nasa’i (1/326) and Ahmad (2/195) transmit it, and its chain is sound according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs. Al-Tayalisi (no. 298) also relates it in an abridged form with the wording: “He instructed him to recite the Quran in five.”
The second route is: Mutarrif → Abu Ishaq → Abu Burdah → Abdullah ibn Amr, who said: I asked, “Messenger of Allah, in how many days should I recite the Quran?” He replied, “Complete it in a month.” I said, “I am able to do better than that.” He said, “Complete it in twenty.” I said, “I am able to do better than that.” He said, “Complete it in fifteen.” I said, “I am able to do better than that.” He said, “Complete it in ten.” I said, “I am able to do better than that.” He said, “Complete it in five.” I said, “I am able to do better than that,” and he granted me no further concession.
Al-Tirmidhi (2/155–156, Bulaq ed.) and al-Darimi (2/471) record it. Al-Tirmidhi said:
