according to the criteria of al-Bukhari and Muslim, except for Yahya ibn Hakim ibn Safwan; no one besides Ibn Hibban declared him reliable, and he is only narrated from by Ibn Abi Mulaykah (as noted in al-Mizan). In al-Taqrib he is graded “maqbul” (acceptable). Fourth chain: Maʿmar → Simak ibn al-Fadl → Wahb ibn Munabbih → ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb → his father → his grandfather ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr. The Prophet ordered him to recite it in forty days, then in a month, then in twenty, then in fifteen, then in ten, and finally in seven. He said: “It stopped at seven.” Ibn Nasr records it in this form (no. 62). Abu Dawud (1/221) transmits it through ʿAbd al-Razzaq—“Maʿmar related it to us”—but phrases it “from Wahb ibn Munabbih, from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr,” omitting the link “from ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father,” and adds: “He never recited in fewer than seven.” Wahb does narrate directly from Ibn ʿAmr, so he may have first heard it through ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb and later heard it from him directly. All the transmitters are trustworthy. The report also appears with an additional wording, namely: (1) It is likewise from Ibn ʿAmr and has two routes.
