Hadith (1).
It has a corroborating chain from the report of Aishah. Muslim ibn Mikhrāq relates that
some people were mentioned in her presence who finish the Quran once or twice in a single
night. She responded: “They may have ‘recited,’ yet they have not truly recited. I used to
stand in prayer with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the ‘complete-night’ fast, and he would
recite Surat al-Baqarah, Al-Imran, and al-Nisa. Whenever he came to a verse that contained a
warning, he would supplicate Allah and seek His protection; and whenever he reached a
verse of glad tidings, he would supplicate Allah and earnestly ask of Him.”
Ahmad transmits it (6/92, 119) through Ibn Lahi‘ah, from al-Harith ibn Yazid, from Ziyad ibn
Nuaym, from Aishah.
This isnad is sound, for the main reservation about Ibn Lahi‘ah concerns his weak memory,
and that flaw arose only after his books were destroyed, as al-Hakim and others observe.
Abd al-Ghani ibn Sa id al-Azdi, al-Saji, and others have said: “When the four ‘Abd Allahs
report from Ibn Lahi‘ah—namely Ibn al-Mubarak, Ibn Wahb, and al-Muqri—the hadith is
sound.” Nuaym ibn Hammad reports that Ibn al-Mahdi said: “I do not rely on anything from
Ibn Lahi‘ah except what was heard by Ibn al-Mubarak and the like.”
I say: Ibn al-Mubarak is indeed among the transmitters of this hadith in Ahmad; therefore its
chain is sahih.
Abu Ya‘la also recorded it, as cited in Majma al-Zawa id (2/272).
I later located it in Sunan al-Bayhaqi (2/310) through Yahya ibn Ayyub, from al-Harith ibn
Yazid. This is a strong supporting route.
(1) The complete wording continues: He then kept saying, “Subhana rabbiy al-azim” (Glory be
to my Lord, the Sublime); his bowing lasted nearly as long as his standing. Then he said
