Hudhayfah ibn al-Yamān said:
“I prayed with the Prophet ﷺ one night, and he began with Surah al-Baqarah. I thought, ‘He will bow at verse one hundred.’ But he went on. I then thought, ‘He intends to finish the entire surah in a single rakʿah.’ Still he continued, and I said to myself, ‘Now he will bow with it.’ Instead, he commenced Surah al-Nisāʾ, recited it, and then inaugurated Surah Āl ʿImrān (2) and recited that as well. He recited in a deliberate, measured tone: whenever he came upon a verse that contained glorification, he glorified; whenever he encountered a verse of petition, he asked; and whenever he passed
(1) That is, in two rakʿahs. Al-Nawawi makes this clear, so the wording of the hadith must be re-examined. When I consulted Ibn Nasr I likewise found the phrase “two rakʿahs.”
(2) The wording recorded here places Surah al-Nisaʾ before Surah Al ʿImran, contrary to the ʿUthmanic order found in all other transmissions of the hadith except one report in Ahmad, which mentions Al ʿImran first and then al-Nisaʾ. That exceptional report comes through Abu Muʿawiyah from al-Aʿmash, whereas the first version is transmitted by ʿAbd Allah ibn Numayr and Jarir—both from al-Aʿmash. Muslim, and likewise al-Bayhaqi, cites Abu Muʿawiyah’s narration alongside the other two but does not note any divergence on this point. Allah knows best.
In any event, the first version is more reliable: two trustworthy narrators agree on it from al-Aʿmash, and the same wording reaches us by a separate chain in Ahmad, as stated above.
Ibn Hajar slipped in Fath al-Bari (3/15)—and was followed by Shaykh al-Qari and others in Sharh al-Shamaʾil (2/95)—when they attributed the second wording to Sahih Muslim. It is not found there, nor in any of the other collections, except for Ahmad in the single chain just mentioned.
Shaykh al-Qari nonetheless preferred that second version, saying: “It is the correct one, for it accords with the Prophet’s established practice and with the Companions’ consensus on the sequence of the surahs—even though there is debate as to whether that sequence is divinely fixed—whereas the order of verses is unquestionably fixed.”
