- The Night Prayer
At times the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would recite it aloud, and at other times he would recite it softly (*). Sometimes he kept the recitation brief, sometimes he lengthened it, and on occasion he prolonged it to an exceptional degree. Ibn Masʿūd said:
“I prayed with the Prophet ﷺ one night, and he remained standing so long that I nearly contemplated something improper.” It was asked, “What did you contemplate?” He replied, “I thought of sitting down and leaving the Prophet ﷺ standing.” (2)
many times over; hence what he actually did was light in comparison with a prayer longer than that, and his established practice remains the decisive standard in every point of dispute.
This is confirmed by the report narrated by al-Nasaʾi and others from Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him): “The Messenger of Allah used to command us to shorten the prayer, and he would lead us with Surah al-Saffat.” Reciting al-Saffat, therefore, is part of the lightening he enjoined.
I say: the isnad of this Ibn ʿUmar hadith is sound (hasan), and I have already discussed it under the heading “Recitation in Fajr.”
The hadith also contains other benefits recorded by al-Nawawi in his commentary on Sahih Muslim and by Ibn Hajar in Fath al-Bari; whoever wishes may consult them.
(*) For its full documentation see above, p. 419; it is likewise supported by the forthcoming hadith of Hudhayfah.
(2) Reported by al-Bukhari, 3/14–15; Muslim, 2/186; and Ahmad, 1/385, through several chains from al-Aʿmash via Abu Waʾil. It was also narrated by al-Bayhaqi, 3/8.
