(continuation) Another recension is in Ahmad (1:126–27), whose isnad is thulathi (only three transmitters between Ahmad and the Prophet). In this version—also given by Muslim—Sufyan relates: “I asked Amr, ‘Abu al-Zubayr has narrated to us from Jabir that he said: Recite: wa-l-shamsi wa-duhaha (By the sun and its morning brightness), wa-l-duha (By the forenoon), wa-l-layli idha yaghsha (By the night when it enshrouds), and sabbih isma rabbika al-a‘la (Glorify the Name of your Lord the Most High)?’ Amr replied, ‘Something to that effect.’
Third route: from Muharib ibn Dithar, who said, “I heard Jabir recount the incident in a shorter form, adding: ‘If you were to recite sabbih isma rabbika (87), wa-l-shamsi wa-duhaha (91) and wa-l-layli idha yaghsha (92), those praying behind you include the elderly, the weak, and people with pressing needs’—I think this belongs to the hadith.” Reported by al-Bukhari (2:159–60) and al-Nasai (1:155); the latter omits the phrase “those praying …” etc. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar notes that the authenticity of this addition is doubtful, for the narrator immediately says, “I think this is part of the hadith.” The remark comes from Shubah, Muharib’s transmitter; other students of Muharib—and of Jabir—relate the report without this clause.
Al-Nasai (1:133) also transmits it from Muharib together with Abu Salih from Jabir, but without the wording, “If you were to recite …” etc.
Fourth route: from Muhammad ibn Ajlan, from Ubayd Allah ibn Miqsam, from Jabir. Al-Bukhari (2:160) cites it in mu‘allaq form from Ubayd Allah, while Abu Dawud (1:127) and Ibn Khuzaymah—as cited in Fath al-Bari (2:153, 160)—give it with a connected chain, though neither al-Bukhari nor Abu Dawud records its wording.
This practice is also related from Anas ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him.
