and once, during a journey, he recited: wa-l-tīni wa-l-zaytūn (“By the Fig and the Olive,” 95:8) (1) [in the rakʿah
= Ahmad also relates the report (2:327, 531) through the chain of Hammad ibn Abbad al-Sadusi, who said: “I heard Abu al-Muhazzim narrate that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded that al-samawat (The Heavens) be recited in the ʿIshaʾ prayer.” Abu al-Muhazzim, however, is classed as unreliable (matruk) in al-Taqrib.
(1) This wording comes from the hadith of al-Baraʾ ibn ʿAzib ﵁: “While the Prophet ﷺ was on a journey he recited, in one of the two rakʿahs of the ʿIshaʾ prayer, al-Tin wa-l-Zaytun (The Fig and the Olive, 95:1).” It is recorded by al-Bukhari (2:199; 8:579), Muslim (2:41), Abu Dawud (1:190), al-Nasai (1:155), al-Bayhaqi (2:393), and Ahmad (4:284, 302) through several routes from Shuʿba, from ʿAdi ibn Thabit, from him. Al-Nasai specifies that it was “in the first rakʿah.” Ibn Hajar quotes the hadith without objection, and its chain is sound.
Muslim, Malik (1:101)—and, following him, al-Nasai, al-Tirmidhi (2:115), Ibn Majah (1:276), al-Bayhaqi, and Ahmad (4:286, 303)—likewise transmit it via Yahya ibn Saʿid from ʿAdi in a shortened form that omits the references to the journey and to which rakʿah it was.
Misʿar also narrates it from ʿAdi, adding: “I never heard anyone with a more beautiful voice than he.” This version is found in al-Bukhari (2:199; 13:445) and in his Afʿal al-ʿIbad (p. 80), as well as in Muslim.
