and then endeavors to twist it so that it fits the narrow scope of his own reasoning, such a person is himself astray and a misleader of others. As for one who is ignorant of all this yet still plunges into issuing legal verdicts without knowledge, he is blinder still and on an even more misguided path.
This truth is plain beyond concealment—so spare me the petty by-roads along the way.
- There is, moreover, a widespread misconception among some blind imitators that keeps them from following the Sunnah when it shows them that their school’s position runs contrary to it. They imagine that following the Sunnah necessarily entails declaring the founder of their school to be mistaken, and that such a declaration amounts to disparaging the imam. Since disparaging any individual Muslim is impermissible, how much more, they argue, one of their imams!
The answer is that this notion is utterly false, and its cause is a failure to study the Sunnah. Otherwise, how could any intelligent Muslim say such a thing? The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “When a judge strives to exercise ijtihād and is correct, he receives two rewards; and if he strives and errs, he receives one reward.” (1)
This hadith demolishes that misconception and makes it unmistakably clear that the statement “So-and-so erred” means, in the language of the Sacred Law, “So-and-so receives one reward.” If, in the very eyes of the one declaring the error, the imam is rewarded, how could describing his mistake be construed as disparagement? Without doubt, this supposition is baseless, and everyone who harbors it must abandon it; otherwise, he is the one who is disparaging the Muslims—and not merely any ordinary Muslim, but the greatest of their imams: the Companions, the Followers, and those after them among the mujtahid imams and others. We know with certainty that these eminent figures did at times declare one another mistaken and rebut one another. (2) Would any rational person claim that they were insulting one another? Indeed, it has been authentically reported that
