and at other times he would recite Idha as-Sama’ Unshaqqat (84:1–25), during which he would perform the prostration of recitation.(1)
(1) This account is part of the hadith of Abu Hurayra. It was related from him by Abu Rafiʿ, who said: “I performed the ʿatama (the late ʿIshaʾ prayer) with Abu Hurayra. He recited ‘Idha as-samaaʾu nshaqqat’ (When the sky is split open, 84:1) and then made a prostration. I asked, ‘What is this?’ He replied, ‘I prostrated at this verse behind Abu al-Qasim ﷺ, and I shall continue to prostrate at it until I meet him.’
Al-Bukhari (2:199, 448), Muslim (2:89), Abu Dawud (1:222), al-Nasaʾi (1:152), al-Tahawi (1:210), al-Bayhaqi (2:322), al-Tayalisi (321), and Ahmad (2:229, 456, 459, 466) record the report through several chains from Abu Hurayra; the wording quoted here is that of Sulayman al-Taymi. Its outward sense indicates that the prostration took place during the prayer itself.
This is reinforced by the version in Ibn Khuzayma, transmitted through Abu al-Ashʿath → Muʿtamir → his father, which reads: “I prayed behind Abu al-Qasim and he prostrated at it.” A similar wording is found in the narration of Yazid ibn Harun from Sulayman: “I prayed with Abu al-Qasim and he prostrated in it,” as cited in Fath al-Bari. For this reason al-Bukhari entitled the chapter “Reciting a prostration verse in the ʿIshaʾ prayer.”
The hadith is also reported by al-Bukhari (2:445), Muslim, al-Nasaʾi, al-Darimi (1:343), al-Tahawi, al-Bayhaqi (2:315), al-Tayalisi (307), Ahmad (2:413, 434, 449, 454, 466, 487, 529), as well as Malik (1:209–210) and, through him, Muhammad (146, 148), by way of Abu Salama¹.
Muslim, Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi (2:462–463), Ibn Majah (1:327), al-Tahawi, and Ahmad (2:249, 461) transmit it through ʿAtaʾ ibn Mina².
