- The ‘Isha Prayer
He ﷺ would recite, in the first two rak‘ahs, from the middle section of al-Mufaṣṣal(1); at times he would recite ash-Shams wa Ḍuḥāhā (91:1–15) and other surahs of comparable length.(2)
(1) This is an excerpt from the hadith of Abu Hurayra cited earlier under “Fajr Prayer.” Al-Suyuti states in al-Itqan (1:63): “The mufassal section of the Quran is divided into long, middle, and short surahs. Ibn Maʿn explains: the long mufassal extends up to ʿamma (Surah al-Nabaʾ), the middle from there to ad-Duha, and from that point to the end of the Quran are the short mufassal surahs. This is the soundest definition offered.”
(2) This report is from the hadith of Buraydah ibn al-Husayb. Ahmad (5:354) transmits it: Zayd ibn Hubab → Husayn ibn Waqid → ʿAbd Allah ibn Buraydah → his father. The chain is sound according to Muslim’s standard. Al-Tirmidhi (2:114) records it through ʿAbdah ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Khuzaʿi → Zayd ibn Hubab and remarks, “a hasan hadith.” It is also found in al-Nasaʾi (1:154) and al-Tahawi (1:126) via ʿAli ibn al-Hasan ibn Shaqiq → al-Husayn ibn Waqid; this route is likewise authentic.
