Asl Sifat Salat al-NabiNasir al-Din al-Albani

…

Ibn Nasr (no. 31) transmits it through the isnad of Asbat – Layth – Nafiʿ. Layth is weak, yet for corroborative purposes he is acceptable. A further chain is given by al-Tabarani in al-Kabir, via Ismail ibn ʿAmr al-Bajali: “narrated to us Israʾil, from Thuwair ibn Abi Fakhita, from Ibn ʿUmar,” with the same wording. Ismail al-Bajali is also weak. Taken together, however, the hadith is strengthened by this corroboration and additional route. Ibn Nasr still objected, saying: “In my view this is not preserved, for what is reliably known from Ibn ʿUmar is that he related—through Hafsa, may Allah be pleased with her—that the Prophet ﷺ used to pray the two rakʿahs before Fajr, and he added: ‘That was a time when I did not enter upon the Prophet.’” I respond: this pits a specific report against a general one, which is methodologically unsound; the two can be reconciled by supposing that Ibn ʿUmar’s close observation occurred on a particular occasion—such as during travel or the like. Allah knows best. As noted earlier (p. 455), the early generations recommended reciting these two surahs in the two rakʿahs of Maghrib and of Fajr. The hadith is likewise reported by al-Tayalisi (no. 257)—and, through him, by al-Maqdisi in al-Mukhtara—as well as by others, through Abu l-Ahwas Salam ibn Sulaym from Abu Ishaq, with wording identical to Israʾil’s version. A supporting narration from Ibn Masʿud is found in Ibn Majah (no. 1166).
