“hasan” (fair) is an unduly modest grading, for the only reservation about Baqiyah concerns his tadlis (ambiguous transmission), and here he has explicitly said, “he narrated to us.” He is corroborated by Abu Haywah—Shurayh ibn Yazid—who is reliable, as al-Shawkani (2/196) notes. It further appears that we are dealing with a single hadith; the discrepancy lies only in the Companion named by those reporting from Hisham. The version reliably preserved from Urwah names Zayd ibn Thabit, as the Hafiz affirmed; therefore, the variant report should be read in light of that established version. Allah knows best. (1) A report from Abu Ayyub states that the Prophet ﷺ used to recite Surat al-Anfal during Maghrib. Al-Tabarani records it in al-Kabir with a sahih chain whose transmitters are all narrators found in the Sahih collections. A second report from Zayd ibn Thabit says that he recited Surat al-Anfal in the two rakahs of Maghrib; this too is in al-Kabir with narrators who appear in the Sahih, as cited in Majma al-Zawaid (2/118). I add: al-Kabir gives the isnad of the first report thus: Abd al-Rahman ibn Salm al-Razi—Sahl ibn Uthman—Uqbah ibn Khalid—from Hisham ibn Urwah—from his father—from him, adding the phrase: “in the two rakahs.”
