in his Muwatta (no. 142); Abu Dawud (1/129); al-Nasai (1/154); al-Tahawi (1/124); al-Bayhaqi (2/392); al-Tayalisi (127); Ahmad (4/85); and al-Tabarani in al-Muʿjam al-Kabir—all of them from Malik → Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri → Muhammad b. Jubayr b. Mutim → his father, with the same wording.
Al-Bukhari likewise recorded it (6/126; 7/258; 8/489), as did Muslim, al-Darimi (1/296), Ibn Majah (1/275), Ibn Khuzayma (1/166/2 = 3/41/1589), al-Tahawi, Ahmad (4/80; 83–84), al-Tabarani, and al-Bukhari in al-Afʿal al-ʿIbad (84), all through various chains from al-Zuhri.
Al-Bukhari and Ahmad add: “He came concerning the prisoners of Badr,” while Ahmad further specifies: “about ransoming the people of Badr.”
Al-Tabarani, in al-Kabir, also relates it via Hushaym—who said, “I do not think I heard it except from al-Zuhri”—→ Sufyan b. Husayn → al-Zuhri → Muhammad b. Jubayr, with the wording: “I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to speak with him about the captives of Badr; I met him while he was leading his companions in the Maghrib or ʿIsha prayer…”—the report continuing much like the following version.
Al-Tahawi, al-Tayalisi (127), Ahmad (4/83; 85), and al-Khatib in Tarikh Baghdad (3/53) transmit it through several routes from Shuʿbah → Saʿd b. Ibrahim, who said: “I heard some of my brothers, from my father, from Jubayr b. Mutim: he went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the ransom of Badr (in another version: ‘about ransoming the polytheists’) while he was still a non-Muslim. I entered the mosque and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was praying Maghrib, reciting at-Tur; it was as though my heart shattered when I heard the Quran.”
There is also a third chain in al-Muʿjam al-Saghir (p. 235) and likewise in al-Kabir of al-Tabarani.
