and would at times recite from the long and middle-length sections of the mufassal. On one occasion he recited:
“Those who disbelieve and bar others from the path of Allah…” (47:38) (1)
while on another he recited Surah al-Tur (52:49). (2)
Ibn ‘Adi said: “He—meaning Ahmad b. Budayl—reported from Hafs b. Ghiyath and others narrations that were rejected; despite his weakness, his hadith is still written down.” Al-Nadr, the judge of Hamadan, related: “Ahmad b. Budayl narrated to us from Hafs this very report.” He continued: “I mentioned it to Abu Zur‘a, who asked, ‘Who transmitted it to you?’ I replied, ‘Ibn Budayl.’ He said, ‘That only makes matters worse.’” Al-Daraqutni observed: “Ahmad alone transmits it from Hafs.”
(1) The narration comes from Ibn ‘Umar. Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Saghir (p. 23) and again in al-Kabir, and al-Maqdisi reproduced it in al-Mukhtara, all through the chain of al-Husayn b. Hurayth al-Marwazi → Abu Mu‘awiya Muhammad b. Khazim → ‘Ubayd Allah b. ‘Umar → Nafi‘ → Ibn ‘Umar:
“The Prophet ﷺ recited for them at Maghrib: alladhina kafaru wa saddu ‘an sabil Allah (Those who disbelieved and barred [others] from the path of Allah).”
This chain is sound according to the criteria of al-Bukhari and Muslim. Al-Haythami cites it in Majma‘ al-zawa’id (2/118) with the wording, “He used to recite for them …,” and comments, “Al-Tabarani related it in his three Mu‘jams, and its transmitters are those of the Sahih.” I add that al-Hafiz al-Maqdisi—and likewise Ibn Hajar in Fath al-bari (2/197)—attribute it to Ibn Hibban through this same route.
(2) Another report is from Jubayr b. Mut‘im, who said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recite Surah at-Tur during the Maghrib prayer.” It was recorded by Malik (1/99) and, through his chain, by al-Bukhari (2/197), Muslim (2/41), and Muhammad
