Asl Sifat Salat al-NabiNasir al-Din al-Albani

and he recited while traveling: “By the fig and the olive” (95:8) in the second rakʿah (unit of prayer) (1).

(1) Al-Tayalisi records it (no. 99): Shuʿbah narrated from ʿAdi b. Thabit, who heard al-Baraʾ say, “I was travelling with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and in the second rakʿah of Maghrib he recited: wa’l-tini wa’l-zaytun (Surah al-Tin).” The isnad is sound according to the standards of al-Bukhari and Muslim. Yahya b. Saʿid also followed ʿAdi; Abu Khalid al-Ahmar relates from him in an abridged form: “I prayed Maghrib behind the Prophet ﷺ and he recited wa’l-tini wa’l-zaytun.” This version is found in Ahmad (4/286), and its chain is likewise sound on their criteria. Yet both of the two Shaykhs transmitted these same routes from ʿAdi with the wording “in ʿIshaʾ” instead of “in Maghrib,” as will be shown, and I have not seen anyone report it with the wording “Maghrib.” It is difficult to deem two trustworthy narrators—Shuʿbah and Yahya b. Saʿid—or those who transmit from them to be mistaken, especially when the texts can be harmonised by saying that the Prophet ﷺ recited the surah in both Maghrib and ʿIshaʾ, and that ʿAdi b. Thabit sometimes reported it one way and sometimes the other. Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr declared the first version sound, as he notes in al-Zad (1/75). I have also found corroboration in the hadith of ʿAbd Allah b. ʿUmar: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited wa’l-tini wa’l-zaytun in Maghrib.” Al-Tahawi records it (1/126) through Israʾil, from Jabir, from ʿAmir, from him. This Jabir is al-Juʿfi, and he is weak.
