- The ‘Asr (Afternoon) Prayer (*)
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would recite in the first two rakʿahs al-Fatiha together with two surahs, making the recitation in the first longer than in the second” (1). “The Companions presumed that he did so in order that latecomers might still catch the rakʿah” (2).
In each of those two rakʿahs he used to recite roughly fifteen verses—about half of what he would recite in each of the first two rakʿahs of the Dhuhr prayer.
“He made the last two rakʿahs shorter than the first two, about half their length” (3), “and he recited in them only al-Fatiha” (4). “At times he would let them hear a verse” (5).
He also recited the same surahs that we mentioned under the discussion of the Dhuhr prayer.
(*) In the Shaykh’s original manuscript we found no proper citation for the hadiths mentioned in this paragraph. He may have intended merely to refer the reader to narrations already documented under “Salat al-Dhuhr,” as his closing remark implies. For the reader’s convenience we have therefore inserted the following guides: (1, 2, 4, and 5) were previously sourced on pp. 457-458, while (3) was previously sourced on pp. 460-461.
٣- صلاة العصر (*)
و" كان رسول الله ﷺ يقرأ في الأُوليين بـ: ﴿فاتحة الكتاب﴾ ،
وسورتين؛ وُيطَوِّلُ في الأولى ما لا يُطَوِّلُ في الثانية " (١) ، و " كانوا يظنون أنه
يريد بذلك أن يدركَ الناسُ الركعةَ " (٢) .
و" كان يقرأ في كل منهما قدر خمس عشرة آية؛ قدر نصف ما يقرأ في
كل ركعة من الركعتين الأُولَيين في الظهر ".
و" كان يجعل الركعتين الأَخيرتين أقصر من الأُولَيين؛ قدر نصفهما " (٣) .
و" كان يقرأ فيهما بـ: ﴿فاتحة الكتاب﴾ (٤) .
و" كان يُسمعهم الآية أحياناً " (٥) .
ويقرأ بالسور التي ذكرنا في (صلاة الظهر) .
