Moreover, he instructed the man who had prayed incorrectly to recite al-Fatiha in every unit (rakʿa) of the prayer. After first directing him to recite it in the opening unit, he said, “Then do that throughout your entire prayer (in another wording: in every rakʿa).” (1)
and that is also the position of ten of Muhammad’s ﷺ Companions after him, while the claim that the last two rakʿahs may be filled with mere tasbih is mistaken.”
I add: When one combines the Prophet’s ﷺ own practice with his order to “the man who prayed poorly” that he must recite in every rakʿah—as will be detailed below—it becomes clear that al-Fatihah is obligatory in every rakʿah. This is the view of the majority, as al-Nawawi and others state, and it is the report transmitted by al-Hasan from Abu Hanifah: recitation in the final two rakʿahs is wajib, so that anyone who omits it through forgetfulness must perform sujud al-sahw.
Kamal Ibn al-Humam likewise leaned toward this position in al-Fath (1/322–323), and it is, God willing, the correct one; for its opponents have no answer to the hadith of “the man who prayed poorly,” and their only evidence is a few Companion reports, which cannot be set against a sound prophetic sunnah.
(1) The documentation of this hadith appeared at the beginning of the book [p. 55].
In another wording recorded by Ahmad (4/340) from the hadith of Rifaʿah: “Then do that in every rakʿah.”
Accordingly, those who maintain—as the Hanafis do—that the Prophet ﷺ merely commanded unrestricted recitation must hold that some form of recitation is obligatory in every rakʿah; whereas those who say he specifically ordered al-Fatihah must affirm that al-Fatihah is obligatory in every rakʿah. This, God willing, is the truth.
