Asl Sifat Salat al-NabiNasir al-Din al-Albani

In the hadith of Abu Saʿid al-Khudri—quoted in full above (pp. 460–461)—the Companions estimated the Prophet’s standing (qiyam) in the last two rakʿahs at one-half of his standing in the first two, i.e., about thirty verses; each of those two rakʿahs would therefore equal roughly fifteen verses. The jurists have differed over whether it is recommended to recite a surah in the final two rakʿahs of a four-rakʿah prayer and in the third rakʿah of maghrib. Some deem it recommended, others do not; both views are ascribed to al-Shafiʿi, as stated in Sharh Muslim. I add: the Companions themselves held divergent positions. • Some did not recite anything beyond al-Fatihah; their reports are collected by al-Tahawi (1/123–124) and al-Bayhaqi (2/65). • Others did recite, among them Abu Bakr al-Siddiq. Al-Muwattaʾ (1/100)—and, through it, al-Bayhaqi (2/64, 391)—relates that Abu Bakr recited in the third rakʿah of maghrib Umm al-Quran (the Opening Chapter, al-Fatihah) together with the verse: “Rabbana la tuzigh qulubana baʿda idh hadaytana …” (Quran 3:8). Its chain is sound, as al-Nawawi confirms (3/383). Al-Bayhaqi further reports that Sufyan b. ʿUyaynah said: When ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAziz heard this narration from Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, he remarked, “I used to follow a different practice until I heard this report; thereafter I adopted it.” Among later scholars, Abu al-Hasanat al-Lakhnawi likewise endorsed this view in al-Taʿliq al-Mumajjad (p. 102), saying:
