his ﷺ recitation of additional verses after al-Fātiḥah in the last two rakʿahs,
and that “he would make the last two rakʿahs shorter than the first two by about half—roughly the length of fifteen verses.” (1)
I add: Imam Muhammad likewise records it in al-Athar (no. 15) with essentially the same wording, though he omits Alqamah’s name.
(1) The report stems from Saʿd b. Abi Waqqas and reaches us through Jabir b. Samurah (may Allah be pleased with them) along two chains.
First chain – ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmayr heard it from Jabir b. Samurah:
“The people of Kufa complained to ʿUmar about Saʿd, saying, ‘He does not pray properly.’ Saʿd replied, ‘Bedouins, are they? By Allah, I do not depart from the prayer of the Messenger of Allah in zuhr and ʿasr: I prolong the recitation in the first two rakʿahs and shorten it in the last two.’ I then heard ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) say, ‘That is exactly what we expected of you, Abu Ishaq.’”
Ahmad (1/179) transmits it: Sufyan narrated it from ʿAbd al-Malik. The same route appears in al-Bukhari (2/187), Muslim (2/38), al-Nasaʾi (1/156), al-Bayhaqi (2/60), al-Tayalisi (30), and Ahmad (1/176, 180) through various isnads from Ibn ʿUmayr.
Second chain – Shuʿbah → Muhammad b. ʿUbayd Allah (Abu ʿAwn) → Jabir, with similar wording. It is recorded by al-Bukhari (2/199–200), Muslim, Abu Dawud (1/128), al-Nasaʾi (1/155), al-Bayhaqi, al-Tayalisi, and Ahmad (1/175).
Those who cite this hadith as proof for reciting a surah in the final two rakʿahs of a four-rakʿah prayer—whose names will be listed below—agree that this recitation should be lighter than that of the first two rakʿahs.
