I add: The most plausible reading of the hadith is that the Prophet ﷺ did this deliberately. This is reinforced by sound reports from several Companions—who, one may assume, acted only on prophetic instruction.
Al-Tahawi (1/123) relates from Jamil b. Murrah and Hakim that they visited Muwarraq al-ʿAjli; he led them in the zuhr prayer and recited Surah Qaf and Surah al-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds), allowing them to hear part of his recitation. When he finished he said, “I once prayed behind Ibn ʿUmar; he recited Surah Qaf and Surah al-Dhariyat and let us hear just as I have let you hear.”
Al-Tahawi and al-Tabarani in al-Kabir also transmit from Abu Maryam al-Asadi: “I heard Ibn Masʿud reciting in the zuhr…,” while al-Bayhaqi (2/348) adds the wording “and in the ʿasr prayer.” He cites the first report, and both isnads are sound. Al-Bayhaqi then remarks: “It is reported from Qatadah that Anas b. Malik recited aloud in the zuhr and ʿasr without making sujud al-sahw (the prostration for forgetfulness).”
I further note that al-Tabarani records in al-Kabir, through Humayd and ʿUthman al-Batti: “We prayed behind Anas b. Malik at zuhr and ʿasr and heard him recite sabbih isma rabbika al-aʿla (Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most High).” Al-Haythami (2/117) comments: “Its transmitters are reliable.”
Another reliable report comes from ʿAlqamah: “I prayed beside ʿAbd Allah (Ibn Masʿud); I was unaware of any recitation until I heard him say rabbi zidni ʿilman (My Lord, increase me in knowledge), so I realized he was in Surah Ta Ha.” This chain too is composed of trustworthy narrators.
