that the Prophet ﷺ used to recite in the zuhr and ʿasr prayers *sabbih isma rabbika al-aʿla* (Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most High; Surah 87) and *hal ataka hadith al-ghashiyah* (Has the story of the Overwhelming One reached you? Surah 88). He adds: “Al-Bazzar transmits it, and its narrators are those found in the Sahih.” Al-Bukhari also records it in his Juzʾ (no. 24) from Saʿid b. Jubayr, who said: “Abu ʿAwanah related it to me from Anas…,” without mentioning the ʿasr prayer or the second surah. I do not know who this Abu ʿAwanah is. Al-Bukhari then gives it through Saʿid by way of Abu ʿUbayd from Anas. This Abu ʿUbayd is either (a) Abu ʿUbayd al-Madhhaji, a trustworthy transmitter used by Muslim, or (b) Abu ʿUbayd, the client of Ibn Azhar—Saʿd b. ʿUbayd—who is reliable according to both Bukhari and Muslim; the first identification is more probable because he is known to narrate from Anas. In any case, the hadith is sound. A supporting report comes from Jabir b. Samurah: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite at the zuhr prayer *sabbih isma rabbika al-aʿla* and similar surahs, and at the fajr prayer something longer than that.” Ahmad relates it (5/106, 108): “Sulayman b. Dawud told us; Shuʿbah told us from Simak, who heard it from Jabir.” This chain is authentic according to Muslim’s standards, and Muslim himself includes it in his Sahih (2/40) with the same isnad. This Sulayman is Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi, the author of the Musnad, wherein he also narrates the report, but there he says the Prophet recited *al-layl idha yaghsha* (By the night when it envelops; Surah 92). That is the wording found in Muslim and others, as will be noted shortly. * The transmitter called “Abu ʿAwanah” here is actually Humayd al-Tawil, as indicated in al-Tahawi (1/208); later the name appears in the corrupted form “Abu ʿUbayd.”
