and they would hear from him a melodic tone when he recited: “Glorify the Name of your Lord Most High” (87:19), and: “Has the account of the Overwhelming reached you?” (88:26) (1).
“Thirty of the Prophet’s Companions gathered and said: …”—and he narrated the report with that same purport.
Zayd al-Ammi, however, is weak.
(1) A parallel version comes from Anas b. Malik. Al-Diyaʾ al-Maqdisi records it in Al-Ahadith al-Mukhtara through Ibn Khuzayma (Sahih, 1/67/2 = 1/257/512) and Ibn Hibban, by way of Muhammad b. Maʿmar b. Ribʿi al-Qaysi → Rawh b. ʿUbadah → Hammad b. Salamah → Qatadah, Thabit, and Humayd → Anas → the Prophet ﷺ: “they used to hear from him …,” and so on. This isnad is authentic according to Muslim’s criteria, and Ibn Hajar in Fath al-Bari (2/194) also traces it to Ibn Khuzayma’s Sahih.
Al-Nasaʾi (1/153), and likewise al-Maqdisi through a different chain, transmit it from Abu Bakr b. al-Nadr, who said: “We were at al-Tuff* with Anas. He led us in the zuhr prayer; when he finished he said, ‘I once prayed the zuhr with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he recited these two surahs for us …,’ and he named them.”
Abu Bakr is an unknown narrator; no one vouched for his reliability, and only ʿAbd Allah b. ʿUbayd the muʾadhdhin is known to report from him (see al-Mizan). Al-Taqrib likewise calls him mastur (“obscure”).
Al-Haythami cites the hadith in Majmaʿ al-Zawaʾid (2/116) with the wording: “From Anas: ….”
*al-Tuff: the seashore, the coastal strip of land (al-Nihaya).
