—because they themselves are at a loss." (1)
In the introduction to the treatise A Gift from the Sultan to the Muslims of Japan by the eminent scholar Muhammad Sultan al-Maʿṣūmī—may Allah have mercy on him—we read:
"A question once reached me from the Muslims of Japan—that is, Japan itself—from the cities of Tokyo and Osaka in the Far East; its substance was as follows:
(1) And now I say:
The many works produced by al-Ghazali in his later years—such as his recently released book “al-Sunnah al-nabawiyyah bayna ahl al-fiqh wa-ahl al-hadith” (The Prophetic Sunna between the Jurists and the Hadith Scholars)—have shown that he himself is one of those preachers who are “in confusion.” Even earlier we had detected, from certain of his lectures, our conversations with him on juristic questions, and some of his writings, clear signs of this bewilderment, of his departure from the Sunna, and of his habit of letting his own intellect determine which hadith are authentic or weak. In doing so he neither refers to the science of hadith and its principles nor consults those who are versed and specialized in it; rather, whatever appeals to him he declares sound, even if it is weak, and whatever displeases him he brands weak, even if it is sound and unanimously accepted.
Many scholars—may Allah reward them—have answered him and set out the details of his confusion and deviation. Among the best replies I have seen are the refutation by our colleague Dr. Rabiʿ ibn Hadi al-Madkhali in the Afghan journal al-Mujahid (issues 9–11), and the treatise by the esteemed brother Salih ibn Abd al-Aziz ibn Muhammad Al al-Shaykh entitled “al-Miʿyar li-ʿIlm al-Ghazali” (The Criterion for al-Ghazali’s Scholarship).(*)
