and we reckoned that in ʿasr his standing in the last two rakʿahs was half of the first two. It was transmitted by Ahmad (3/2) – his wording – by Muslim (2/37), al-Bukhari in his minor collection (no. 25), Abu Dawud (1/128), al-Tahawi (1/122), al-Darimi (1/295), al-Nasaʾi (1/83), al-Daraqutni (pp. 128-129), and al-Bayhaqi (2/64, 66, 390), all through a set of chains originating with Hushaym who said: “Manzur – i.e. Ibn Zadhan – related to us from al-Walid b. Muslim, from Abu al-Mutawakkil (or: from Abu al-Siddiq) from him.” Ahmad reports this with uncertainty, whereas the other narrators state categorically “from Abu al-Siddiq.” Muslim, al-Tahawi, al-Darimi, Ahmad (3/85) and al-Bayhaqi also transmit it through Abu ʿAwanah → Manzur → al-Walid → Abu al-Siddiq al-Naji with the wording: “He used to recite in the zuhr prayer …,” and so on, but without mentioning any estimation of length. Al-Daraqutni comments: “This isnad is firmly established and sound.” Al-Nasaʾi records part of the report (1/83) through the same route but with the link “from Abu al-Mutawakkil.” There is another chain: Ibn Majah (1/274) records it from al-Masʿudi who said: “Zayd al-ʿAmmi related to us from Abu Nadrah, from Abu Saʿid al-Khudri: Thirty of the Badrī Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gathered and said: ‘Let us measure the recitation of the Messenger of Allah in those prayers in which he recited quietly.’ Not one of them disagreed; they gauged his recitation in the first rakʿah of zuhr at about thirty verses …” – and the hadith continues in similar terms. Ahmad (5/365) likewise records it from al-Masʿudi and Sufyan, both from Zayd al-ʿAmmi, from Abu ʿAliyah.
