‘Abd al-Razzaq also transmits—through Maʿmar, from Yahya—at the end of the same report: “We assumed he did that so the people could still catch the rakʿah.” Abu Dawud and Ibn Khuzaymah have a similar wording transmitted by Abu Khalid—from Sufyan—from Maʿmar.
I observe, however, that Abu Dawud does not relate it through this chain; he records it only via ʿAbd al-Razzaq, and al-Bayhaqi cites it from Abu Dawud in that form.
This supplementary phrase is supported by a hadith of ʿAbd Allah b. Abi Awfa stating that the Prophet used to remain standing in the first rakʿah of Zuhr until no footstep could be heard. It is reported by Abu Dawud, al-Bayhaqi, and Ahmad (4/356) through Muhammad b. Juhadah—from an unnamed man—from ʿAbd Allah b. Abi Awfa. The chain is weak because of the unnamed narrator; al-Bayhaqi comments: “He is said to be Tarafah al-Hadrami.” Al-Bayhaqi then cites another route: Muhammad b. Juhadah—Tarafah al-Hadrami—ʿAbd Allah b. Abi Awfa, with a longer wording. Tarafah himself is unknown; al-Taqrib grades him “maqbul” (acceptable when corroborated).
I later found an additional corroboration: Shahr b. Hawshab relates—from Abu Malik al-Ashʿari—that the Messenger of Allah would make the four rakʿahs equal in recitation and standing, yet deliberately lengthened the first so that people could join the prayer.
