- The Ẓuhr (Noon) Prayer
And in the first two rakʿahs he would recite al-Fātiḥah (the Opening of the Book) together with two surahs, making the first recitation longer than the second. (1)
and the rest of the transmitters are reliable narrators listed in Tahdhib al-Tahdhib, with the exception of this ‘Abd Allah b. Yazid. I have found no biographical entry for him, and it seems most likely that a scribal error occurred and that the intended name is Yahya b. ‘Abd Allah b. Yazid b. Unays al-Ansari, for he reports from Talhah b. Khirash and Ibn Ma‘in reports from him, and he is trustworthy. Allah knows best.
Al-Hafiz remarked: “Ibn Hibban has, on the authority of Jabir, a report that encourages reciting the two surahs in those two rak‘ahs,” and it appears he was referring to this very hadith.
I later located it in al-Mawarid (no. 611) exactly as I had supposed—praise be to Allah— and al-Hafiz graded it hasan in his al-Ahadith al-‘Aliyat (no. 16).
(1) The hadith is reported from Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him):
The Prophet ﷺ used to recite in the first two rak‘ahs of Zuhr Surah al-Fatihah and two additional surahs, and in the last two rak‘ahs only Surah al-Fatihah; he would sometimes let us hear an ayah, and he made the first rak‘ah longer than the second. He did the same in ‘Asr and likewise in Fajr.
It is recorded by al-Bukhari in his Sahih (2/193–194, 207) and in his individual booklet (no. 24); Muslim (2/37); Abu Dawud (1/127–128); al-Nasa’i (1/153); al-Darimi (1/296); Ibn Majah (1/274–275); al-Tahawi (1/131) in abridged form; al-Bayhaqi (2/59, 63, 65–66, 193, 347–348); and Ahmad (5/295, 297, 300, 301, 305, 307, 311; 4/383) through various chains from Yahya b. Abi Kathir—‘Abd Allah b. Abi Qatadah—from his father.
Al-Hafiz said (2/194):
