And he would also say, “How excellent the two surahs are.” (1)
On another occasion he heard a man recite the first surah in the first rakʿah and remarked, “This servant has believed in his Lord.” When the man recited the second surah in the following rakʿah, he said, “This servant has come to know his Lord.” (2)
and this is likewise the position adopted by our later Shafi‘i authorities, as stated in al-Fath (1/228).
(1) Reported by Ibn Majah and Ibn Khuzaymah.
(2) Al-Tahawi also recorded it (1/176): Muhammad b. Ibrahim b. Yahya b. Junad al-Baghdadi narrated to us; he said: Yahya b. Ma‘in narrated to us; he said: ‘Abd Allah b. Yazid b. ‘Abd Allah b. Unays al-Ansari narrated to us; he said: I heard Talhah b. Khirash relate from Jabir that a man rose and performed the two rak‘ahs of Fajr. In the first rak‘ah he recited “Qul ya ayyuha’l-kafirun” (Say: O you who disbelieve) until he finished the surah, whereupon the Prophet ﷺ said, “This servant has believed in his Lord.” He then rose for the second rak‘ah and recited “Qul huwa Allahu ahad” (Say: He is Allah, the One) until he finished the surah, and the Prophet ﷺ said, “This servant has come to know his Lord.” Talhah added, “Therefore I prefer to recite these two surahs in these two rak‘ahs.”
The isnad is sound; every narrator in it is well known. As for Muhammad b. Ibrahim—whose kunya is Abu Bakr—al-Khatib (1/397) gives his biography and transmits with his chain from ‘Abd al-Rahman b. Yusuf b. Khirash that he said, “He is upright, trustworthy, and reliable.”
(*) The Shaykh—may Allah have mercy on him—also attributes the hadith to Ibn Bishran’s compilation al-Sifah in its printed edition.
