(It was recorded by al-Tirmidhi (2/296-297), Ibn Nasr (31), al-Tahawi (1/175-176) and al-Tabarani in al-Kabir, all of them through Abd al-Malik b. al-Walid b. Ma‘dan, from ‘Asim, from Abu Waʾil, from him. Al-Tirmidhi remarked: “A gharib (solitary) hadith,” meaning that it is weak; its flaw lies in this Abd al-Malik, for he is unreliable, as stated in al-Taqrib. Ibn Majah (1/355) also transmitted it, but restricted it to the two rakʿahs after Maghrib.) Fourth: The report of Anas. Al-Tahawi (1/176) recorded it, saying: Ibn Abi Dawud narrated to us; ‘Uthman b. Musa b. Khalaf al-ʿAmmi narrated to us; my brother Khalaf b. Musa narrated to us from his father, from Qatadah, from Anas who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would recite in the two rakʿahs before Fajr: ‘Qul ya ayyuha’l-kafirun’ and ‘Qul huwa Allahu ahad.’” All the transmitters are trustworthy except this ‘Uthman; I have found no biographical entry for him. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar, in Fath al-Bari, attributed the hadith only to al-Bazzar, and so did his teacher al-Haythami in Majmaʿ al-Zawaʾid (2/218), where he added: “Its transmitters are reliable.” Allah knows best. Fifth: From Aisha who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would recite them quietly,” and she mentioned ‘Qul ya ayyuha’l-kafirun’ and ‘Qul huwa Allahu ahad.’ It was related by al-Darimi (1/336), al-Tahawi (1/175) and Ahmad (6/225, 238) through Hisham, from Muhammad: Aisha was asked about the recitation in the two rakʿahs before the dawn prayer; she replied accordingly.
