and on occasion he would recite: “Say, O you who disbelieve” (109: 6) in the first [unit of prayer], and “Say, He is Allah, One” (112: 4) in the second (1).
“Amanna billahi wa ma unzila ilayna wa-ma unzila ila Ibrahim …” (We believe in Allah, in what has been sent down to us, and in what was sent to Ibrahim …) to the end of the verse. In the second prostration he recited: “Rabbana amanna bima anzalta wa-ittabaʿna al-rasula faktubna maʿa al-shahidin” (Our Lord, we believe in what You have revealed and we follow the Messenger, so write us among the witnesses). Abu Dawud adds: or he recited: “Inna arsalnaka bil-haqqi bashiran wa nadhiran wa la tus’alu ʿan ashabi’l-jahim” (Surely We have sent you with the truth as a bearer of glad tidings and a warner, and you will not be questioned about the people of the Blazing Fire); al-Darawardi was uncertain which of the two it was.
The isnad can probably be rated hasan, for its transmitters are reliable men used by Muslim, apart from this ʿUthman; a number of trustworthy narrators reported from him and Ibn Hibban listed him among the reliable. Ibn Maʿin, however, said: “I do not know him,” and Ibn ʿAdi agreed. Al-Hafiz (in Tahdhib) remarked: “That is astonishing from both of them, for others knew him perfectly well, as you can see.” In Taqrib he is graded “maqbul” (acceptable).
(1) On this point there are many hadiths:
First: from Abu Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited in the two rakʿahs of Fajr: “Qul ya ayyuha’l-kafirun” and “Qul huwa Allahu ahad.” Related by Muslim (2/160–161), Abu Dawud (1/197), al-Nasa’i (1/151), and Ibn Majah (1/351) through Marwan b. Muʿawiyah → Yazid b. Kaysan → Abu Hazim → Abu Hurayrah.
Second: from Ibn ʿUmar who said: “I watched the Prophet ﷺ for a month, and he used to recite in the two rakʿahs before Fajr: ‘Qul ya ayyuha’l-kafirun’ and ‘Qul huwa Allahu ahad.’”
