that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite in the two sunnah rakʿahs before Fajr— in the first of them … (the remainder of the wording). Muslim related it (2/161), and so did Ibn Khuzaymah (2/163, no. 460) through the isnad: Abu Khalid al-Ahmar → ʿUthman b. Hakim → Saʿid b. Yasar → Ibn ʿAbbas. Al-Hakim likewise transmitted it (1/307) and said, “Sound according to Muslim’s criterion,” an unwarranted remark in his Mustadrak. A further route exists: Ahmad (1/265) reports it via Ibn Ishaq, who said: “ʿAbbas b. ʿAbd Allah b. Maʿbad b. ʿAbbas told me, from one of his household, from Ibn ʿAbbas, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite in his two rakʿahs before Fajr: al-Fatihah and the last two verses of al-Baqarah in the first rakʿah, and al-Fatihah together with the verse from Al ʿImran, ‘Qul ya ahla’l-kitab taʿalaw ila kalimatin sawaʾin baynana wa-baynakum…,’ to the end of the verse, in the second.” This chain is sound except for the unidentified narrator from Ibn ʿAbbas. The hadith is also in Muslim; al-Nasaʾi (1/151); and al-Tahawi (1/176) through Marwan b. Muʿawiyah al-Fazari; in Muslim again through ʿIsa b. Yunus; and in Abu Dawud (1/198) through Zuhayr— all from ʿUthman b. Hakim with the wording of Abu Khalid, except that they add: “and in the second rakʿah he recited: Amanna billah washhad bi-anna muslimun (We believe in Allah; bear witness that we are Muslims).” Corroboration comes from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah, reported by Abu Dawud (1/198), al-Tahawi (1/106), and al-Bayhaqi (3/43): ʿAbd al-ʿAziz b. Muhammad said, ‘ʿUthman b. ʿUmar b. Musa narrated to us: I heard Abu’l-Ghayth say: I heard Abu Hurayrah say: “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recite in the two prostrations before Fajr; in the first prostration: Qulu…”’
