Continuing: Limiting its citation to al-Awsat is insufficient. Al-Tabarani also included it in al-Muʿjam al-Kabir via the chain: Yahya al-Himmani → Yazid ibn ʿAtaʾ → Simak ibn Harb → the Companion, in the wording: “He used to recite in the dawn prayer: Qaf. wal-Quran al-Majid, and Ha Mim, and Ya Sin, and similar passages.”
Although this very chain appears in al-Awsat, the remark “its transmitters are those of the Sahih” is inaccurate, for Yazid ibn ʿAtaʾ al-Yashkuri is not among the transmitters of the Sahih collections; al-Bukhari mentions him only in Khalq Afʿal al-ʿIbad. He has also been criticized for poor memory, so Ibn Hajar says in Taqrib: “His hadith is weak.” Muslim and others record the hadith with different wording, and Yazid’s solitary version suggests that he erred.
I later found a strong corroboration. Imam Ahmad (4/34) said: Yunus narrated to us; Abu ʿAwanah narrated from Simak ibn Harb, from a man of Madinah, who said he prayed behind the Prophet ﷺ and heard him recite in the dawn prayer: Qaf. wal-Quran al-Majid and Ya Sin. wal-Quran al-Hakim.
This chain is sound according to Muslim’s criterion. Abu ʿAwanah—Waddah ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Yashkuri—is reliable and firmly established, as noted in Taqrib. The unnamed “man of Madinah” is probably Jabir ibn Samurah, as other reports from Simak indicate. The wording implies that the Prophet ﷺ recited one of these surahs on one occasion and the other on a different occasion, not that he combined them in a single prayer or a single rakʿah.
