and sometimes he would recite Surah Ya Sin (36:83) (1).
I say: This narrator’s report is classed as hasan because it is supported by the following corroborating narration:
The second hadith: A Companion of the Prophet ﷺ relates that the Prophet ﷺ led the dawn prayer, recited Surah al-Rum, and his recitation became confused. When he had finished he said: “What is the matter with people who pray with us yet do not perform ablution properly? It is they who cause the Quran to become confused for us.”
It was transmitted by al-Nasa’i (1/151), Abd al-Razzaq (2/116), and Ahmad (5/363, 368) through the chain of Abd al-Malik ibn Umayr, from Shabib Abu Ruh, from that Companion. (1)
Shabib—he is the son of Nuaym, though some say the son of Abu Ruh, his kunya being Abu Ruh al-Himsi—was listed by Ibn Hibban among the reliable narrators. A number of scholars, including Hariz ibn Uthman, reported from him, and Abu Dawud remarked: “All of Hariz’s teachers are trustworthy.” Al-Taqrib states: “Trustworthy; those who counted him among the Companions were mistaken.”
Abd al-Malik ibn Umayr is trustworthy, though his memory deteriorated and he sometimes practiced tadlis; nonetheless both al-Bukhari and Muslim included his narrations. Al-Bazzar’s chain (1/234, no. 477, Kashf al-Astar) likewise shows the report coming through Abd al-Malik.
(1) This refers to the hadith of Jabir ibn Samurah stating that the Prophet ﷺ would recite Surah Ya-Sin in the dawn prayer. It was narrated by al-Tabarani in al-Awsat with transmitters who also occur in the Sahih collections; see Majma al-Zawaid (2/119). —Its chain is good. This is the position I have finally adopted, contrary to what I wrote earlier in Tamam al-Minna (p. 180) and elsewhere; let this be noted.
