At times he would recite more than that, for the report says, “He would recite sixty verses or even more” (1); one of its transmitters added, “I am not sure whether that was in one rak‘ah or in both!” Another narration states, “He would recite Surah al-Rum (30:60)” (2).
It was narrated by al-Tahawi (1/36) and by Ahmad (4/78), and its chain is also sound. It is plainly one and the same hadith describing a single incident; some transmitters retained details that others overlooked or mentioned elements the others omitted, and the additional wording must therefore be accepted.
(1) The report comes on the authority of Abu Barzah al-Aslami. It is recorded by al-Bukhari (2/17; 21–22; 200), Muslim (2/40), Abu Dawud (1/66), al-Nasai (1/151), al-Darimi (1/298), Ibn Majah (1/272), al-Bayhaqi (2/389), al-Tayalisi (124), and Ahmad (4/419, 420, 423, 425) through several chains from Sayyar Abu al-Minhal. Al-Bukhari and Ahmad add in one version: Sayyar said, “I do not know whether it happened in one of the two rakahs or in both of them.”
(2) Two further reports deal with this point.
The first is from al-Agharr al-Muzani, stating that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited Surah al-Rum during the dawn prayer. It was narrated by al-Bazzar. Al-Haythami comments (2/119): “Its chain includes Muammal ibn Ismail, who is reliable, although it has been said that he makes many mistakes.” I would add that al-Taqrib describes him as “truthful but of weak memory.”
