and its chain is sound (hasan). Al-Nasa’i also recorded it, as did Ibn Khuzaymah (1/69/2 = 1/266–267, no. 534), al-Tahawi in Mushkil al-Athar (1/35), and Ahmad (4/144) through al-Walid ibn Muslim, who said: “Ibn Jabir related to me from al-Qasim a similar account, adding: ‘Recite them whenever you go to sleep and whenever you rise.’” Bishr ibn Bakr likewise corroborated it from Ibn Jabir; al-Tahawi cited this supporting route. The second route: Saʿid ibn Abi Saʿid al-Maqburi reports from Uqbah the same episode, adding: “Seek refuge with them, for no one who seeks refuge has ever sought refuge with anything like them.” It was transmitted by Abu Dawud—and, from him, al-Bayhaqi—and by al-Tahawi (1/36) through Muhammad ibn Ishaq from Saʿid. Muhammad ibn ʿAjlan also corroborated it from Saʿid; al-Nasa’i records it with the wording: “No petitioner has ever asked with anything like them, nor has any seeker of protection sought protection with anything like them.” That version, however, does not state that he led the congregation in prayer with the two surahs. The chain is hasan, and rises to sahih when the supporting reports are considered. The third route: Abu Usamah → Sufyan → Muʿawiyah ibn Salih → ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Jubayr ibn Nufayr → his father → Uqbah, who said that he asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the two refuge-giving surahs (al-muʿawwidhatayn). Uqbah said:
