and, at other times, he would recite from the shorter surahs of the Mufaṣṣal, such as: “When the sun is folded up” (81:29).(1)
“Sound according to Muslim’s criterion.”
I say: This comes through the narration of al-Masʿudi from Ziyad, and al-Masʿudi’s memory became confused in his later years.
(1) ʿAmr b. Hurayth (may Allah be pleased with him) related: “I heard the Prophet reciting at dawn: Idha ash-shamsu kuwwirat (When the sun is wrapped up).” Muslim (2/39), al-Nasai (1/151), al-Darimi (1/297), al-Bayhaqi (2/388), al-Tayalisi (142, 168), and Ahmad (4/306-307) transmit it through Misʿar and al-Masʿudi from al-Walid b. Sariʿ. Al-Masʿudi adds: “When he reached the verse wa-l-layli idha ʿasʿasa (and by the night when it departs) I kept saying to myself, ‘What is meant by the night when it ʿasʿasa?’”
It has two further chains:
The first: through Ismaʿil b. Abi Khalid from Asbagh, the client of ʿAmr b. Hurayth, who said: “It is as though I can still hear the Prophet’s voice in the morning prayer reciting: Fala uqsimu bil-khunnas, al-jawari l-kunnas (I swear by the retreating stars, that run and disappear).” Abu Dawud (1/130) and Ibn Majah (1/272) report it, and its isnad is hasan (good).
The second: through al-Hajjaj al-Muharibi from Abu al-Aswad, conveying the same sense; Ahmad (4/307) records it.

الأول منهما: عن إسماعيل بن أبي خالد عن أَصْبغَ مولى عمرو بن حريث عنه
