What the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—used to recite in the prayers

With regard to the surahs and verses he—peace and blessings be upon him—recited during the prayers, they varied according to the five obligatory prayers and other kinds of prayer. Below is a detailed outline, beginning with the first of the five:

  1. The Fajr Prayer

In this prayer he—peace and blessings be upon him—would usually recite from the long mufassal surahs (1); and at times he would recite:

(1) What is meant is the final seventh of the Quran, beginning with Surah Qaf; this, as already noted from Ibn Hajar and others, is the stronger view. The report comes from Abu Hurayrah and was transmitted from him by Sulayman ibn Yasar. Sulayman said: “I have never seen anyone whose prayer so closely resembled that of So-and-so”—referring to an imam who was then in Madinah. Sulayman continued: “I therefore prayed behind him: he would lengthen the first two rakʿas of Dhuhr and shorten the last two, shorten the ʿAsr prayer, recite in the first two rakʿas of Maghrib from the short surahs of the mufassal, recite in the first two rakʿas of ʿIsha from the middle mufassal, and at Fajr from the long mufassal.” Al-Dahhak said: “Someone who heard Anas ibn Malik told me that Anas used to say: ‘I have never seen anyone whose prayer more closely resembled that of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, than this young man’—meaning ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-Aziz.” Al-Dahhak added: “I then prayed behind ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-Aziz, and he did exactly what Sulayman ibn Yasar had described.” The narration is recorded by al-Nasaʾi (1/154), al-Bayhaqi (2/388), and Ahmad (2/300; 329–330) through several chains: al-Dahhak ibn ʿUthman → Bukayr ibn ʿAbd Allah → Sulayman [ibn Yasar]. Its chain is sahih according to Muslim’s criteria, and Ibn Khuzaymah and others likewise declared it sahih, as noted in
