Al-Tirmidhi graded it “hasan gharib.” Al-Hakim declared it “sahih according to al-Bukhari’s criteria,” a judgement endorsed by al-Dhahabi. In fact, it is only sahih, because Bahir ibn Saʿd is not cited by al-Bukhari in his Sahih, but only in al-Adab al-Mufrad. Al-Nasaʾi also transmitted the report (1/245) via Muhammad ibn Sumiʿ, who said: “Zayd—that is, Ibn Waqid—narrated to us from Kathir ibn Murrah,” with a similar wording. It is likewise found in the Musnad (4/201) through the chain of Haytham ibn Humayd → Zayd ibn Waqid → Sulayman ibn Musa → Kathir ibn Murrah. The addition of Sulayman ibn Musa—who is trustworthy—constitutes a strong corroboration for Khalid ibn Maʿdan.
