that the Prophet ﷺ once came out at night … [the remainder of the report]. Al-Hakim said: “It is sound according to the criteria of Muslim,” and al-Dhahabi concurred; that judgment is correct. Al-Tirmidhi, however, considered it doubtful, remarking: “This hadith is gharib. It is only transmitted with a fully connected isnad by Yahya ibn Ishaq from Hammad ibn Salamah, whereas most narrators relate it from Thabit, from Abd Allah ibn Rabah, as a mursal report.” Shaykh Ahmad Muhammad Shakir, the hadith’s commentator, replies: “This criticism does not impair the authenticity of the report, for Yahya ibn Ishaq is trustworthy (thiqa), reliable (saduq), as Ahmad stated. Ibn Saʿd added that he was trustworthy and preserved his narrations well. The fact that the chain is connected here is an additional detail that must be accepted.” Abu Dawud also recorded the hadith through Musa ibn Ismail—Hammad → Thabit al-Bunani—directly from the Prophet ﷺ as a mursal report, omitting the words: “O Abu Bakr, raise your voice …” and the rest. Imam Ahmad likewise transmitted it (1/109) with a similar wording through a narration of Ali, and al-Haythami commented (2/366): “Its narrators are trustworthy.” I would note, however, that this chain contains Hani ibn Hani; no one narrated from him except Abu Ishaq al-Sabiʿi, and al-Taqrib classifies him as mastur (obscure). Al-Tabarani also reported the hadith in al-Kabir with a similar wording through a narration of Ammar ibn Yasir.
