I add: the report of Umm Haniʾ also corroborates and strengthens it. She said, “I used to hear the Prophet’s recitation at night while I was on the roof of my house.” Al-Nasāʾī (1/157), al-Tirmidhī in al-Shamāʾil (2/141), Ibn Mājah (1/407), al-Bayhaqī in al-Dalāʾil (6/257), al-Ṭaḥāwī, and Aḥmad (6/341–343) transmit it through several routes, all of them from Abū al-ʿAlāʾ al-ʿAbdī Hilāl ibn Khabbāb, from Yaḥyā ibn Jaʿdah, from her. This chain is also hasan. In al-Zawāʾid it is said: “Its isnād is ṣaḥīḥ and its narrators are trustworthy. Al-Tirmidhī relates it in al-Shamāʾil and al-Nasāʾī in al-Kubrā.” End of quote.
I remark: although Hilāl is reliable, he suffered deterioration in his later years; consequently his traditions cannot be graded ṣaḥīḥ, and at most reach the level of ḥasan. Al-Ḥāfiẓ has judged it strengthened (9/74). An additional wording will be cited at the close of the section on “recitation” [p. 568].
I then located another supporting report from Ibn Masʿūd. Al-Ṭabarānī records it in al-Kabīr (9/9396) with the following chain: Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥaḍramī related to us; Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan narrated to us; Ḥumayd ibn Ḥammād ibn Khuwār from al-Aʿmash, from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAlqamah, who said:
“A man came to ʿAbd Allāh (Ibn Masʿūd) and asked, ‘Tell us, when did the Prophet perform witr?’ He replied, ‘When about as much of the night remained as had elapsed up to the maghrib prayer.’ They then asked about his recitation, and he said, ‘He would recite loudly enough for the people of the house to hear.’”
Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥaḍramī—whose kunya is Abū Jaʿfar—is a transmitter from whom al-Ṭabarānī frequently narrates in
