and, “Whenever he recited while he was inside the house, those in the room could hear his recitation.” (1) This indicates a middle course between loud projection and silent murmuring.
“And on occasion he would raise his voice even further so that people on their rooftop could hear him,” (*), that is, outside the room.
(1) Ibn Abbas related: “The Prophet’s recitation was only loud enough for someone in the adjacent room to hear while he was inside the house.” It is reported by Abu Dawud (1/208), al-Bayhaqi from him (3/10–11), al-Tirmidhi in al-Shamail (2/143), al-Tahawi (1/203), Ahmad (1/271), and al-Tabarani in al-Kabir (11/218) through Sa id ibn Mansur, a Makkan authority; al-Diya al-Maqdisi also cites it through the chain Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi al-Zinad – Amr ibn Abi Amr – Ikrima – Ibn Abbas. This isnad is hasan: all its transmitters are those used by al-Bukhari and Muslim except Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi al-Zinad, whose unreliable memory was criticized; Taqrib al-Tahdhib describes him as “reliable, but his memory deteriorated.” I subsequently found another route for the report: al-Bukhari records it in Khalq Af al al-Ibad (no. 84), as does al-Bayhaqi, with a chain sahih by their standards; its wording deserves to be placed in the main text (**), and the same applies to the version cited by al-Diya al-Maqdisi.
(*) For a complete documentation, see below, p. 422.
(**) The wording reads: “He would recite in one of his apartments so that those outside could hear him.” We have also noticed that the late Shaykh, in his work Sifat al-Salah, has already inserted the forthcoming hadith of Umm Hani between square brackets in the main text, which apparently fulfils his aim. And Allah knows best.
