(1) Abd al-Haqq says in al-Tahajjud (1/90): “With respect to the voluntary prayers performed during the day, no sound report establishes that the Prophet ﷺ either recited audibly or kept silent; the stronger view is that he recited in a low voice. It is related that he once passed by Abd Allah ibn Hudhafah while the latter was praying in the daytime and reciting aloud, and he said to him: ‘O Abd Allah, let Allah hear, but do not make us hear.’ This hadith, however, is not reliable.” (2) There are several hadiths on this point. The first comes from Aisha and is transmitted through a number of chains. 1. Muawiyah ibn Salih reports from Abd Allah ibn Abi Qays: “I asked Aisha: How did the Prophet ﷺ recite at night—did he do so quietly or aloud? She replied: He did both: sometimes he would recite softly, and sometimes audibly. I said: Praise be to Allah who has left the matter broad.” Muslim narrates it (1/171) without the quoted wording; al-Bukhari in Af al-aʿmal (84) in abridged form, omitting Ibn Abi Qays’s remark; al-Nasaʾi (1/245); al-Tirmidhi (2/311), who graded it “hasan sahih” and whose wording is cited here; al-Hakim (1/310); and Ahmad (6/73, 149) through several routes. Al-Iraqi judged it sound in Takhrij al-Ihyaʾ (1/315). Al-Hakim said, “Authentic according to Muslim’s criterion,” and al-Dhahabi agreed. 2. Burd ibn Sinan reports from Ubadah ibn Nusayy, from Ghudayf ibn al-Harith: “I said to Aisha …,” and he related a similar account.
