Asl Sifat Salat al-NabiNasir al-Din al-Albani

and the Eclipse Prayer (1).

(1) Lady Aisha, the Mother of the Believers, narrates that the Prophet ﷺ recited aloud in the salat al-kusuf (eclipse prayer). The report is found in al-Bukhari (2/439-440), Muslim (3/29), and al-Nasa’i (1/222) through the chain of Abd al-Rahman ibn Namir, who heard Ibn Shihab relate it from Urwa on her authority. It is also transmitted by Abu Dawud (1/186), al-Darqutni (p. 188), and al-Hakim (1/334) via al-Awza‘i; by al-Tirmidhi (2/452) and al-Tahawi (1/197) via Sufyan ibn Husayn; by al-Tahawi and Ahmad (6/65) via Uqayl; and by al-Tayalisi (no. 206) and Ahmad (6/76) via Sulayman ibn Kathir. All four paths trace back to Ibn Shihab with the wording al-kusuf. What is meant is unmistakably a solar eclipse, as proved by Sulayman ibn Kathir’s version in Ahmad: “The sun was eclipsed during the Prophet’s ﷺ lifetime; he came to the prayer-place, pronounced the takbir, the people followed, then he recited and did so aloud…” Al-Tirmidhi classifies the hadith as “hasan sahih”; al-Hakim rules it “sahih on the criteria of the two shaykhs,” and al-Dhahabi concurs—correctly so. After reviewing these chains, Ibn Hajar remarks: “These routes corroborate one another and, in combination, yield certainty; hence the criticism based on the alleged weakness of Sufyan ibn Husayn and others is baseless. Even al-Awza‘i’s lone route would suffice, and audible recitation in this prayer is also reported from Ali, both as a marfu and as a mawquf narration.”
