Raising and lowering the voice in the five daily prayers and elsewhere

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would recite aloud in the Dawn Prayer (Fajr) and in the first two rakʿahs of Maghrib and ʿIshāʾ, while he would recite quietly in Ẓuhr and ʿAṣr, in the third rakʿah of Maghrib, and in the last two rakʿahs of ʿIshāʾ. (1)

During the portions in which he recited softly, they could still tell that he was reciting because his beard would tremble. (2)

(1) Al-Nawawi states in al-Majmuʿ (3/389) that the entire Muslim community is unanimously agreed on this point, the later generations transmitting it from the earlier ones, and that numerous sound and mutually corroborating hadiths attest to it. Some of those reports will be cited below under “What the Prophet ﷺ used to recite in the prayers.” The consensus is likewise recorded by Ibn Hazm in Maratib al-Ijmaʿ (p. 33) and endorsed by Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyya; see also al-Irwaʾ (no. 345). (2) Several Companions conveyed this practice. Among them is Khabbab ibn al-Aratt, for Abu Maʿmar ʿAbdullah ibn Sakhbara related: “We asked Khabbab, ‘Did the Prophet ﷺ recite in Dhuhr and ʿAsr?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’ We said, ‘How did you know?’ He said, ‘From the movement of his beard.’” This narration is recorded by al-Bukhari in his Sahih (2/184, 195) and in his separate tract (no. 25); Abu Dawud (1/128); Ibn Majah (1/274); al-Tahawi (1/123); al-Bayhaqi (2/37, 54, 193); Ahmad (5/109, 112; 6/395); and al-Tabarani in al-Kabir through several chains from al-Aʿmash, who said: “ʿUmara narrated to me from him.” Another Companion who reported this is ʿAbdullah ibn Masʿud. Imam Ahmad (5/371) said: “ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi related to us, from Sufyan, from”—the original mistakenly reads ibn—“Abu al-Zaʿraʾ, from Abu al-Ahwas, from one of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, who said: …”
