“What became of my disputant and yours?”
He replied, “Messenger of Allah, Allah spoke the truth and I spoke falsely; he has been martyred.” (1)
(1) Ibn Khuzayma recorded it in his Sahih (no. 1634), and al-Bayhaqi transmitted it with a good chain. The wording that concerns us appears in Abu Dawud (no. 758 – Sahih Abi Dawud), while the basic incident is found in the two Sahihs. The first additional phrase is Muslim’s in one narration; the second is Ahmad’s (5/74); the third and fourth are al-Bukhari’s.
There is another report from Ibn Abbas stating that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed two rakahs (units of prayer) in which he recited nothing except the Opening of the Book (Surah al-Fatiha). It is related by Ahmad (1/282), al-Harith ibn Abi Usama in his Musnad (p. 38 of the supplements), and al-Bayhaqi (2/62) with a weak chain.
In earlier editions I had graded this hadith as hasan, but I later realized that I was mistaken, for its chain hinges on Hanzala al-Sadusi, who is weak. I do not know how this escaped my notice—perhaps I confused him with someone else. In any case, praise be to Allah who guided me to recognize my error. Consequently, I deleted it from the book, and Allah compensated me with the hadith of Muadh, which conveys the same point as the report of Ibn Abbas. Praise be to Allah; by His favor righteous deeds are completed.
